An easy way to fail is to play a lot of World of Warcraft, eat a lot of Pizza Hut, and watch porn all day. An more insidious, but just as sure way to fail, is to focus on a lot of things at once. That’s why I stopped myself from reading random blogs today at work. Because when I let a lot of extra information in my mind, it becomes noisy in there. My mind’s noisy enough, it doesn’t need any extra fuel.
Earlier this month I told myself that I would focus on three things. But I now realize that it’s foolish to spread my attention so thin. eBay beckons and I will answer the call. Today I worked at Starbucks for 6 hours in the morning. It was like a fraternity party in there- barely enough foot space to walk. I was making a drink when this guy came up to me and said “Can I have a cup of water?” Looking a bit confused, as I was in the flow of making Chai Tea Lattes and extra hot Mochas, he held up the cup and in a condescending tone said “Cup. Do you copy? Do you know what a cup is?” Fucking douchebag. But back to the point.
So I worked 6 hours at Starbucks today. I got out of Starbucks around 12:30 and my other job at the health food store started at 2 pm, so I had just enough time to hit up a few garage sales. I go to the first one and there was nothing too great.
I pull up to the second garage sale and it’s abandoned. Literally no one was around. In the middle of the driveway there was a big sign that said Honor System. Donations Appreciated. I look around the tables for a bit and notice the glass cups for sale have like an inch of water in them, but it hadn’t rained for a few days. ‘How long has this stuff been sitting out here’ I thought to myself. Weirder still, I walk into the open front porch and notice a big pile of clothes sitting there. There’s another sign that says Free Clothes. A bunch of radios line the opposite wall, and a strange musty smell fills the patio. I ended up finding a set of golf clubs for that I can probably make $50 dollars profit on and a blank tape. I donated $6 to the cause and left.
After I went to my other job at the health food store. Nothing eventful happened until my break. I’m walking in the adjacent parking lot, getting some exercise, when I walk past my favorite dumpster diving spot behind a popular office store. I dive in, and sure enough, there are two boxes of new computer mouses. I check them on Amazon and, sure enough, they are worth something.
So in total I worked a little over 11 hours at Starbucks and the health food store, which netted me around $95 after taxes. These boxes of mouses will end up making me around $100 profit after fees. I made the same amount of money looking in a dumpster than I did working two jobs. My jobs really are trash.
But this meandering story brings me to my case and point: I want to focus on eBay this month. I want to make $1000 profit reselling by August 20th, a little over a month. My sales this week, which net about $100 will count as will anything that sells from this point on. I will also chronicle my journey on this blog, and post haul picture stories, which I have never seen myself.
Tomorrow I’ll post a side project that I’m working on, and give some helpful tips about reselling.
Until next time.
